Description:
There is great danger, especially in our Christian context, in staying busy with religious activity but failing to love. Everything you might do for God means absolutely nothing without love (cf. 1 Cor. 13:1-3). Everything in the Christian life is built upon love. Love is the greatest commandment: love God and love others, the two are inseparable. Jesus not only taught His disciples this truth, He demonstrated it. Why would Jesus do what would have been the most demeaning, shameful, and embarrassing act possible in washing the feet of His own disciples? He did it in order to picture His love, work, and the expectation He had for them and for us. This act shows us what type of love Christ has for us: humble, unconditional, and serving. It points forward to work He would do on the cross where He washed, not our feet, but our souls. It demonstrates what Christ expects of all His disciples: don’t just tell the world God loves them, but love them as Christ loved us.
