Getting to the Heart of Love

Matthew 5:43-48
The Way of the Kingdom Part 2
Dr. Steven Smith
August 25, 2013

Description:
Jesus has been demonstrating the type of righteousness demanded by the Kingdom of God. We’ve seen that it is a righteousness that goes deeper than the external action and flows from the heart. Throughout the last half of chapter five, Jesus has been taking us to the heart of various sins—murder, lust, divorce, lying, and retaliation.

One common theme that runs throughout these issues of the heart is love, which is the issue that closes out this section. Later in Matthew, Jesus will refer to love as the greatest of all commandments from which all the other commands flow (22:37-40). If love for God and for others reigned, the sins dealt with in this chapter would take care of themselves.
