Hunger and thirst for righteousness is a longing only God can give. God has created us to have a longing that can only be filled by Him. This longing, when tainted by sin, drives us to try and fulfill that desire with other things; this always leads to disappointment. To hunger and thirst for righteousness is to recognize that the longing in our hearts is a longing for God, then to choose to satisfy it with Him and not substitutes.
