This text is the introduction to the rest of chapter 5. Here Jesus is clarifying his
relationship to the Old Testament. What does Jesus say he has come to do? What
does Jesus say that He has not come to do? Why would this have been important
for the Jewish disciples who were listening to him?
In verse 20 Jesus makes a statement that was shocking to his hearers. What does
Jesus mean when he says that our righteousness must be greater than the
scribes and Pharisees? What characterizes their righteousness? How is ours to
be different?
