Description:
This Sunday we come to the delusional church of Sardis in Revelation 3:1-6. I call them a delusional church because they think that they are a living and thriving church because of their many works, but they are in fact declared spiritually dead by Christ. What a frightening thought—a group of Christians who have a reputation of being alive, think they are alive, look like they are alive externally, but what they possess is actually a dead Christianity. Is it possible that we are living under a similar delusion?

The only way we can answer this question is if we know what Jesus means when He declares the Sardis Christians “dead” in verse 1. Prepare this week by reading through the letter multiple times and meditating on these questions: What is dead Christianity? What does it look like? What does it not look like? As you consider these questions, pay special attention to the way Christ is described in the first half of verse 1.
